A tramper has been rescued and airlifted to hospital after she got lost while climbing to the summit of Mt Taranaki.

Around 30 police, and search and rescue volunteers went looking for the 34-year-old woman after she went missing while tramping on Mt Taranaki on Saturday.

Her rescuers were able to communicate with her via text messages, and later via shouting but were unable to reach her until Sunday morning.

She was airlifted from the mountainside, and taken to Taranaki Base Hospital with suspected mild hypothermia.
