Two trampers on Mt Ruapehu are being walked to safety after calling emergency services for help after getting lost.

A man and woman alerted police about 7.30pm on Saturday that they were lost after setting off on the round the mountain track from Whakapapa Village to Whakapapaiti Hut at lunchtime.

A team of LandSAR volunteers found the trampers shortly after 4am on Sunday as poor weather conditions prevented the use of a helicopter.

Both were carrying some warm clothing and food but were found huddled in their sleeping bags.

A man who set off an emergency locator beacon on the Whanganui River area on Saturday night near Whakahoro was rescued by a jet boat.

While on Sunday morning the Greenlea Rescue Helicopter went to Waihohonu Hut on the eastern side of the Tongariro National Park to take a woman in her 20s to Taupo Hospital.
