Trans-Tasman netball set for shake-up

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 18/05/2016

The end of the 10-team trans-Tasman netball competition will be made official on Thursday.

The competition, which begain in 2008, will be scrapped next year and new New Zealand and Australian domestic formats will begin.

Netball Australia will unveil three new franchises when it lifts the lid on its revamped 2017 competition.

A Netball Australia press conference has been scheduled in Melbourne, where the details of the teams and a new broadcast deal will be revealed.

The five existing Australian franchises are expected to be joined by three new sides in an eight-team competition.

Second teams in Sydney and Melbourne are tipped to be announced along with another Queensland club, which could be based on the Sunshine Coast.

Some, if not all of the newcomers, will have ties to teams from major football codes.

AFL clubs Collingwood and Greater Western Sydney and NRL side Melbourne Storm all expressed an interest in being involved with one of the new franchises.

Meanwhile a six-team domestic competition, featuring an extra franchise in Auckland, has been proposed for New Zealand.

Australia and New Zealand will stage separate competitions, but the revamp is still tipped to include a crossover component.
