The government says more transitional housing is coming on stream every week and the target of 2150 places by the end of the year will be achieved.

Transitional housing provides homeless families with places to live while permanent solutions are found.

Social Housing Minister Amy Adams says there are now 1004 transitional housing places.

"This means 4000 households a year can benefit from the progress we've made so far," she said.

"We're on track to achieve our aim of 2150 places by the end of the year which means many more will benefit."

Associate Social Housing Minister Alfred Ngaro says more places will open in the coming weeks, particularly in Auckland.
