Trial date set after record cocaine haul

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 4/10/2016

Three men arrested following New Zealand's biggest cocaine seizure will stand trial next year.

The trio were arrested during in July after Customs found 35 kilograms of the drug inside a 400-kilogram diamante-encrusted horse head statue that arrived by plane from Mexico.

Two Mexican men, 44 and 29, and a 56-year-old American appeared in the High Court at Auckland on Wednesday where they had a trial date set down for May 22 next year.

All three have had suppression on their names extended until their next appearance in November.

New Zealand police say they find an average 250g of cocaine in a year, and at the time believed the size of the haul suggested there could be a connection to offshore organised crime.
