The Greens fear US president-elect Donald Trump will take his country out of international climate change agreements.

They're saying New Zealand and other countries must step up and take the lead so progress that's been made isn't wasted.

"Donald trump has said he would take the US out of the Paris Climate Agreement and rescind President Obama's executive actions on climate change," co-leader Metiria Turei said on Thursday.

"The world has a very short window of opportunity to curb emissions and avoid the worst of climate change - we can't wait the length of a Trump presidency for progress, the change must start now."

Ms Turei says major emitters like China, the European Union, Canada and India are already investing billions in renewable energy, so there's a lot of momentum that can be built on.
