Trump's comments `indefensible': Key

Prime Minister John Key says comments Donald Trump made about women in 2005 are "indefensible" but he won't comment on the US presidential candidate's chances.

Prominent Republicans have started distancing themselves from their candidate after the Washington Post released tapes revealing Mr Trump's vulgar and sexist comments.

He bragged about groping women and trying to seduce a married woman.

He apologised for making those comments during a campaign debate that's just taken place.

""The comments themselves are indefensible and that's why he's gone out and apologised for them," Mr Key told reporters.

"Whether he's fit to be president of the United States - that's a matter for the US voters."
