Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has called to offer support in the wake of Monday's earthquake.

"I spoke with John Key just a few moments ago and assured him of absolute solidarity and support from Australia," he told Australia's Seven Network.

"John appreciated that, he knows that we support the Kiwis and they support us when it comes to emergencies and natural disasters like this."

Mr Key has not called a national emergency in response to the magnitude 7.5 earthquake that struck near Hanmer Springs in the South Island just after midnight on Monday.

He said the first steps to recovery are restoring confidence of the nation, and assessing the damage.
