Health Minister Jonathan Coleman found out about a typhoid outbreak when he was watching a TV news bulletin, and he's upset about that.

"I am very unhappy about that aspect of it. I have received a number of apologies, I certainly don't expect to find out about things on the TV news, that's for sure," NZME quoted him as saying.

An Auckland woman died on March 28 after contracting typhoid while hospitalised with serious health issues.

A family spokesman told RNZ many of the women's extended family and friends weren't aware she had died from typhoid until a media release was issued the day after the funeral.

On Wednesday health authorities confirmed 16 typhoid cases.
