A spin-off derived from hit vampire movie What We Do In The Shadows is to hit Kiwi television screens.

The six-part comedy series Paranormal Event Response Unit, conceived by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, will screen on TVNZ 2.

Broadcast funding agency NZ On Air has granted $1.4 million to makers Two Canoes for the 30-minute episodes in which naive police officers Karen and Mike, who starred in the 2014 movie, keep people safe from supernatural phenomena in their own reality series.

"Comedy is serious business and notoriously hard to get right. We are delighted that Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi are bringing their talents to smaller screens," said NZ On Air boss Jane Wrightson.

The agency will also stump up $240,000 for eight episodes of Only In Aotearoa to screen on Maori Television.

Original a webseries, it features comedy skits from a Maori perspective.

Two TV3 comedy shows also get funding with $1.7m going towards 26 editions of Jono and Ben and $1m for 32 episodes of news comedy show 7 Days.
