Two men have been arrested after the theft of a number of vehicles in and around Nelson, some of which were extensively damaged.

Police say the value of the damaged vehicles, which had been driven in an inappropriate manner and burnt with property inside them, was about $140,000.

The arrests follow an operation focusing on stolen vehicles and associated crimes in the Nelson, Mapua and Wakefield areas since the beginning of the year.

A 19-year-old has been charged with 31 offences, including theft of vehicles, arson, and possession of methamphetamine and utensils.

Another 19-year-old has been charged with 20 offences relating to theft and arson.

Sergeant Dale Smith said police had spoken to associates of the two men and he didn't rule out other persons being charged.

"It appears the use of methamphetamine and other drugs has been a factor, given the mindless destruction of private property," he said.

"The financial cost to a lot of these victims and the feeling of insecurity at their own homes have caused a them a lot of undue stress."
