Two arrests after gun arsenal burglary

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 11/11/2016

Police investigating the theft of an arsenal of weapons from a Dunedin home have arrested two men they say have links to gangs.

The arrests of a 56-year-old and 57-year-old came after searches of a vehicle and an address on the outskirts of Dunedin on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, police say.

Both men have been charged with unlawful possession of a pistol, three charges of unlawful possession of military style firearms and one charge of receiving stolen firearms and further charges are likely.

Police recovered a large amount of ammunition.

Both men live out of Dunedin and are affiliated to gangs. Police say the firearms were stolen to on-sell to criminals.

Five rifles and 23 handguns, including several military-style semi-automatic firearms, along with ammunition, were stolen from a flat in Maitland St on October 25. The owner of the guns holds a firearms licence.

The arrests are part of an investigation into that burglary which is ongoing.
