Two arrests for NZ drug importation

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 22/07/2016

Two women have allegedly smuggled methamphetamine with a potential street value of up to $7 million into New Zealand via parcels of common household goods.

The women were arrested in Hamilton and Invercargill on Friday and appeared in courts facing multiple drug importation charges.

Between February and July, customs officers seized 11 packages of household goods with the drug hidden inside.

The packages were sent from five countries to different names and addresses in Hamilton, Huntly and Invercargill.

Customs Investigations manager Maurice O'Brien said it was a case of local offenders attempting to smuggle drugs into the regions, possibly thinking they'll be under the radar and evade capture.
