Two charged over police officer attack

Two men have been charged after a police officer was assaulted and knocked unconscious during a routine traffic stop in Auckland.

The police dog handler pulled a car over on Bairds Rd, Otahuhu at about 3.50am on Saturday, and as he spoke to the driver, two men got out of the car and assaulted him, police say.

He was knocked unconscious before a passing truck driver scared off his attackers, who fled in their car.

A passing ambulance took the officer to hospital, where he was treated for moderate injuries and has since been released.

A 21-year-old man and a 17-year-old teen have been charged with injuring with intent to injure and will appear in Manukau District Court on Monday.
