Two people were killed after their car collided with a tourist bus in a fiery crash near Te Anau, police have confirmed.

The rented car collided with the bus on the Te Anau-Milford Highway in Fiordland on Tuesday afternoon and a fire enveloped both vehicles.

The car was burnt so badly police initially struggled to work out how many people were inside.

On Thursday morning they confirmed there were two victims.

They have yet to be identified.

All the tourists on the bus were able to make it safely out off their vehicle, with some being treated at the scene and later at a medical centre.

Police are asking for any witnesses to come forward.
