Two people took in more smoke than they needed when a house and couch were set alight by fireworks in south Auckland on Guy Fawkes night.

The property in Park Ave, Papatoetoe, was substantially damaged by the blaze and two people suffered smoke inhalation.

The Fire Service dealt with 67 fireworks-related calls around the country during the night, out of 402 111 calls, says northern communications shift manager Karren Larking.

Calls included vegetation fires and people worried about the size of bonfires.

The lower North Island was quiet, with just eight fireworks-related callouts, says shift commander Mike Wanoa.

He wasn't sure why.

"We dodged a bullet," he said.

Meanwhile, one person was also treated for smoke inhalation, but not taken to hospital, following a fierce house fire at Stillwater, near Greymouth on the West Coast, on Sunday morning.

Eight fire crews were needed to control the fire, which caused the single-storey building to partially collapse.

Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause but it is not believe to be fireworks-related.
