Two hurt in Lyttelton ship fire

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 17/04/2016

Two people have been injured in a blaze on a fishing ship at Christchurch's Lyttelton Port.

The ship fire was reported at wharf seven at about 8am on Monday, a Fire Service spokesman says.

The crew of the ship had to be evacuated, and several had to be checked for smoke inhalation, he said.

St John's ambulance service says it had taken two people to the Christchurch Hospital emergency department with minor to moderate injuries.

Two others had been checked but were cleared.

Thirteen fire crews had managed to contain the blaze by 9.30am but several would remain on site for some time.

The ship is believed to be the factory trawler Desert Rose. A spokeswoman for the port says she can only confirm it is not a port-owned vessel.
