Unbeaten Steel down Tactix in netball

NZN 5/06/2016

The unbeaten Southern Steel have celebrated skipper Wendy Frew's 100th trans-Tasman netball league appearance in style with a dominant 81-51 win over the Mainland Tactix in Christchurch.

The match featured another display of sharp shooting from Jamaica international Jhaniele Fowler-Reid, who grabbed 64 goals to fall one short of her own competition record for a match.

The most prolific scorer in the league this season, Fowler-Reid missed with just two attempts, the first coming after she had landed 51 goals, and she finished the match with a success rate of 97 per cent.

The result on Sunday means the Steel remain the only undefeated team on either side of the Tasman and it clinched them top spot in the New Zealand conference with four rounds to go.

The April meeting between the two sides in Invercargill had ended in a 58-58 draw - the Steel's only dropped point of the year.

This time, it was largely one-way traffic from the start.

Jane Watson led the Steel's defensive effort, while mid-courters Gina Crampton and Shannon Francois regularly found Fowler-Reid.

The Steel came out of the blocks at a sprint and Watson and fellow circle defender Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit forced turnovers that the visitors converted on the way to a 5-0 lead.

The margin continued to increase and, with three minutes to go in the opening quarter, Tactix coach Sue Hawkins looked to her bench to try to stem the flow of goals, but to little avail.

The margin was 42-24 at half-time and grew to 64-36 going into the last quarter.

The defeat left the Tactix fourth in the NZ conference, but still firmly in the mix for a play-off spot.
