University Oval evacuated after fire alarm

A fire alarm in the main grandstand at Dunedin's University Oval has forced the evacuation of the entire ground in the first cricket Test between New Zealand and South Africa.

The alarm went off just after 5pm on Friday, when South Africa were 14-1 in their second innings.

Hundreds of people left the grandstand and the entire ground was later evacuated, although players and match officials remained on the playing surface.

A Fire Service spokesman says steam set off the alarm but he was unsure of the source.

The ground was given the all clear and play resumed following a delay of about 20 minutes, but only a few spectators had returned to the ground.

Play will run until 6.50pm to make up for the lost time.
