New Zealand's premier cyclist George Bennett is set to be sidelined from the domestic racing scene this summer with ill health.

Bennett tweeted that he had contracted glandular fever and was taking a precautionary rest, probably ruling him out of the national road championships in Napier in three weeks.

A lack of training time on the bike could also place the 26-year-old in doubt for the Tour Down Under in South Australia in mid-January, an event he has contested for four successive years.

Bennett enjoyed a breakthrough 2016, finishing 10th overall in the Tour of Spain, the best placing by a New Zealander on a Grand Tour.

The LottoNL-Jumbo rider was 53rd in the Tour de France and soon afterwards was the lone Kiwi in the Olympic road race.
