Unwell Kenny pulls out of Tall Blacks tour

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 6/06/2016

Perth Wildcats guard Jarrod Kenny has pulled out of the Tall Blacks' Olympic qualifying campaign for health reasons and been replaced by Derone Raukawa.

Kenny said an ongoing stomach complaint had the potential to make him a liability during New Zealand's looming games in Asia and Europe before they contest the Olympic qualifying tournament in the Philippines.

"I had thought about coming on tour and toughing it out but that would not be doing myself or the team justice," he said.

"If you are going to commit to the Tall Blacks, you have to be prepared to give all you have and I know I am just not going to be 100 per cent for some time."

Kenny, a Tall Black since 2009, was a member of the Wildcats team who beat the New Zealand Breakers in the Australian NBL final series in March.

Coach Paul Henare says while losing Kenny is a blow, the team's depth at guard is good with Tai Webster, Shea Ili, Corey Webster and the uncapped Raukawa, 21, who has stood out in his debut season with the Southland Sharks in the New Zealand NBL.

The team leaves on Wednesday for a tour which takes in Japan, China, Latvia and Lithuania before arriving in Manila for the Rio qualifying tournament from July 5.
