Up-and-down Fox sits third

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 21/07/2016

New Zealander Ryan Fox has begun his title defence at the Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge in France with a see-saw first round, but is still handily placed at two shots off the lead in a share of third.

Fox recorded two bogeys and five birdies through the front nine, then mixed five more birdies with a double bogey on the par-four 16th to card six-under 65.

He shares third place with Matthew Nixon of England and Dutchman Wil Besseling.

Sebastian Heisele (Germany) fired an eight-under 63 to hold the early lead over Ross Kellett of Scotland by one stroke.

Fox, ranked 185th in the world, was last week named with 43rd-ranked Danny Lee and world No.1 Lydia Ko to compete at the Rio Olympics.

He will become the first player to retain a European Challenge Tour title for 12 years if he defends his crown at La Vaudreuil in northern France.
