Upton recommended for environment post

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 28/03/2017

Former National Party cabinet minister Simon Upton has been recommended by a cross-party committee of MPs to be the next Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, and he's almost certain to get the job.

The commissioner's role is to keep a close watch on the environment and report to parliament on the impact of government policy.

Mr Upton is set to take over from Jan Wright when her second five-year term ends in October.

Mr Upton was an MP for 20 years before leaving parliament in 2001, and held several cabinet positions including health minister and minister for the environment.

He is currently head of the OECD's environment directorate in Paris.

Labour and the Greens back the recommendation but NZ First says it "smacks of jobs for the boys".
