A specialist New Zealand Fire urban search and rescue team has arrived in Kaikoura to assess damaged buildings after Monday's massive quake caused widespread damage in the coastal town.

The 20 strong team deployed with two dogs from Christchurch as another 20 members remain on stand-by in the city.

Additionally, USAR teams in the North Island have joined emergency response efforts in Wellington as they help assess buildings using drone surveillance.
