Urgent quake legislation on the way

Legislation is expected to be introduced to parliament next week that clears the way for urgent repairs in quake-damaged Kaikoura.

The government is discussing it with opposition parties, seeking agreement that will allow the bill to be passed quickly.

Prime Minister John Key has previously said the legislation is likely to be similar to that brought in after the Christchurch earthquakes.

It will cut through consenting rules that usually hold up infrastructure repairs and allow authorities to make decisions about road closures and other issues.

Acting Civil Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee has confirmed cross-party talks are underway and says he expects broad support for the measures.
