The Washington mall gunman who killed five people in a shooting attack has been captured after a manhunt, police say.

The gunman who killed five people in an attack on a busy shopping mall in the US state of Washington has been arrested after a day on the run, police said.

"Gunman captured tonight by authorities," Mark Francis of Washington State Patrol tweeted on Saturday.

No further details were immediately available, though local broadcaster K5 said the man was aged 20 and had been arrested at around 7pm in the nearby city of Oak Harbour.

A press conference was to be held later.

Four women were shot dead and one man died of his injuries after being airlifted to hospital following the attack at the busy Cascade Mall in Burlington on Friday evening.

Police had tweeted a picture of the shooter, who left the scene before police arrived, and described him as "a Hispanic male wearing grey".

Local media said that the shooter had gone to the cosmetics counter at Macy's department store and opened fire with a rifle for around a minute, before laying the weapon on the counter and walking off.

The motive for the attack remained unclear, though police said there was no evidence that pointed to terrorism.
