A 63-year-old Wisconsin heart surgeon is due to be sentenced on careless driving charges in New Zealand.

Kenneth Wolnak earlier pleaded guilty in Nelson District Court to careless driving after he did a U-turn in a SUV on State Highway 60 near Nelson, killing two people and injuring four others in February.

He and his wife were on holiday in New Zealand at the time.

He collided with a truck, which then hit a 4WD towing a caravan.

A 41-year-old man who was driving the truck and a 69-year-old man who was driving the 4WD both died.

He is to be sentenced in Nelson District Court on Monday.
