Hamburg's US striker Bobby Wood has been given a three-match Bundesliga ban for violent conduct.

American striker Bobby Wood has been given a three-game ban for violent conduct by the German Football Association on Tuesday, dealing a further blow to beleaguered Bundesliga bottom club Hamburg.

Wood was red carded for elbowing the body of Cologne's Dominique Heintz in an off the ball incident in Hamburg's latest defeat on Sunday.

Hamburg, the only original Bundesliga side never to have been relegated, have taken just two points from nine games this season and have not scored in their past seven.

Wood scored both the side's league goals this term.

Coach Markus Gisdol, who replaced Bruno Labbadia early in the campaign, branded Wood's action against Cologne as "inexcusable."

A Hamburg spokesperson confirmed the club accepted the ban, meaning Wood will miss matches with Borussia Dortmund, Hoffenheim and Werder Bremen.
