Utilities Disputes seeks to raise profile

More than a fifth of consumers have gripes about their electricity and gas.

But most don't know there's an independent service they can use to resolve their complaints, Utilities Disputes Commissioner Nanette Moreau says.

She says a UMR Research survey showed that 22 per cent of respondents had complaints about their power.

But just 6 per cent knew about Utilities Despites, previously called the Office of the Electricity and Gas Commissioner, which offers advice and guidance to consumers who have issues with their provider.

Ms Moreau says one of the organisation's main goals is to become more well-known in the community .

"We want customers to know we are here," she said.

The office dates back to 2001 and ministerial approval was given last November for it to be incorporated as a limited liability non-for-profit company and to be renamed.
