The Red Bull Racing ace from New Zealand, who has only just returned from England for this weekend's action, notched a one minute and 19.3311 second fastest lap to top the timesheets in the second of two hour-long practice runs on Friday.

Van Gisbergen's time wasn't the quickest of the day, with Holden's Tim Slade setting a new practice lap record in the opening session with a 1:19.2435.

Ford young gun Cameron Waters' opening session best time of 1:19.3927 was the third-fastest lap of the day.

Nissan's Rick Kelly, who'll make his 200th Supercars start on the weekend, bounced back from a disappointing opening session to post the fourth-fastest lap of the day in the second session.

Kelly, who could only complete eight laps in the opening session, clocked a 1:19.4332 in an impressive recovery.

Championship leader Craig Lowndes, who could only finish 22nd in the opening session, was fifth-fastest in the second session with a late run.

Birthday boy and defending champion Mark Winterbottom was mid-pack throughout the day while Jamie Whincup's day was interrupted by a mechanical failure in the rear of his Red Bull Racing Commodore early in the second session.

Saturday's action features a third practice session before qualifying in the afternoon and then a 40-lap race from 4pm.
