Venus edges Rio teammate Daniell

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 21/07/2016

New Zealander Michael Venus has pipped Rio Olympics teammate Marcus Daniell in the quarter-finals of the Gstaad ATP tournament in Switzerland.

Top-seeded Venus and Croatian partner Mate Pavic downed Daniell and Brazilian Marcelo Demoliner 7-6(3) 7-6(5) in a match which stretched out for just over an hour and a half.

Both combinations had similar statistics, but Venus and Pavic proved more clinical in winning the vital tiebreak points.

The pair will now face Indian pair Purav Raja and Divij Sharan in the semi-finals after they beat Englishman Dominic Inglot and Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 7-6(6) 6-7(5) 10-7 in the quarters.

Daniell and Venus will join a list of 32 combinations from 25 countries in the men's doubles at Rio, including Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka for Switzerland, Andy and Jamie Murray for Britain and Serbian pair Novak Djokovic and Nenad Zimonjic.
