Venus in line for year's fifth ATP title

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 22/07/2016

New Zealand doubles specialist Michael Venus has reason for confidence heading into his sixth ATP doubles final of the year.

Venus and Croatian partner Mate Pavic fought back to beat Indian pairing Purav Raja and Divu Sharan 3-6 7-6 10-2 in the semi-finals of the Swiss Open in Gstaad on Friday.

The top-seeded duo will play a decider against the winners of Saturday's semi-final, between fourth seeds Julio Peralta of Chile and Horacio Zeballos of Argentina and unseeded pair Sander Arends of the Netherlands and Tristan-Samuel Weissborn of Austria.

Venus and Pavic have won four of their final appearances in 2016, in Auckland, Montpellier, Marseille and s-Hertogenbosch. They were runners-up in Nice.

Venus, who sits two places outside a career-high world ranking of 39, will represent New Zealand at the Rio Olympics. His playing partner is 59th-ranked Marcus Daniell, who fell to Venus and Pavic in this week's quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, world doubles No.60 Artem Sitak of New Zealand was eliminated in the semi-finals of the Croatia Open in Umag.

Fourth-seeded Sitak and Nicholas Monroe of the United States fell 7-5 6-2 to Croatian pair Antonio Sancic and Nikola Mektic.
