Venus loses Wimbledon doubles marathon

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 5/07/2016

Leg-weary New Zealander Michael Venus has lost his men's doubles third-round marathon which spanned two days.

Venus and his Croatian partner Mate Pavic went down 6-3 7-6 4-6 4-6 16-14 to third seeds Jamie Murray of Scotland and Bruno Soares of Brazil.

After bad light ended play on Monday, only four more games were needed to decide the contest which lasted just over five hours.

The result ends New Zealand's involvement at Wimbledon.

Venus was aiming to be the first Kiwi male to reach a grand slam quarter-final since Brett Steven in the doubles at Wimbledon in 1998, when he partnered American Pat Galbraith.

It is the fifth third-round elimination at a grand slam that Venus has suffered, including last year's Wimbledon campaign with Pavic.

Venus will contest the doubles at the Rio Olympics alongside Marcus Daniell.
