Leading Kiwi doubles exponent Michael Venus has blown several match points to bow out of contention at the Australian Open.

Venus and Swedish partner Robert Lindstedt lost 6-4 3-6 7-6 in the second round to ninth seeds Ivan Dodig (Croatia) and Marcel Granollers (Spain).

An early break in the deciding set pushed Venus and Lindstedt to the verge of victory before squandering break points on serve and ultimately losing the tiebreaker 7-5.

Two New Zealand doubles hopefuls are still to play in the second round.

Artem Sitak and American Nicholas Monroe face seventh seeds Lukasz Kubot (Poland) and Marcelo Melo (Brazil) while Marcus Daniell and Brazilian Marcelo Demoliner take on sixth seeds Raven Klaasen (South Africa) and Rajeev Ram (USA).
