Kiwi Michael Venus is a six-time tournament winner on the ATP doubles circuit after powering to victory in Portugal.

Venus and American playing partner Ryan Harrison crushed experienced Spaniards David Marrero and Tommy Robredo 7-5 6-2 on a clay surface to win the final of the Estoril Open.

Victory came just inside an hour, with momentum swinging when Venus and Harrison snared the first service break of the match in the 12th game to win a tense opening set.

They broke the Spaniards twice in the second set.

Venus was delighted to end a relatively lean run in 2017, having won four of his five career titles last year with Croatian Mate Pavic.

"It's great to win the title here with my good friend Ryan," Venus said.

"We played pretty good today and it's nice to get a title again after a hard few months of results."

The pair displayed their fighting qualities in the semi-finals on Saturday when they saved three match points to beat Ariel Behar (Uruguay) and Aliaksandr Bury (Belarus).

Venus's world doubles ranking of 41 should climb into the late 30s.
