Shop verandas along Riddiford Street in Newtown are being chopped off so bigger buses can be used.

Greater Wellington Regional Council wants to use higher capacity and double-decker buses on some routes from 2018.

Shop verandas in Riddiford Street between Green and Wilson streets are being trimmed by about half a metre and the footpath is being widened at the bus stop.

The work gears up from Monday and will take about three weeks.

Councillor Chris Calvi-Freeman from Wellington City Council says it's a busy route.

As well as more leeway for buses, the end result will be an even and well-finished line of verandas that will enhance the streetscape.

Work is also planned around the bus stop on the south side of Brandon Street in the central city in January so future larger buses will be able to use the street when required.
