Police are appealing for help to recover the selection of medals taken from the veteran's home in Church Street, Onehunga on October 23.

They say the man served 24 years in the British military, 14 of which were spent in the Special Air Service.

Other items taken included a gold-coloured pocket watch - which has the man's name, rank and service engraved on it - along with a sapphire ring, necklace, and a Breitling watch.

"The medals that were taken are of extreme sentimental and historic value, and of great importance to the victim and his family," police said.

"Police would like to hear from anyone who may recognise the medals, or who knows where they may be."
