Midfielder Roberto Soriano was shown a red card as Villareal missed a chance to keep pace with the La Liga frontrunners in a 1-1 draw at home to Malaga.

Villarreal had midfielder Roberto Soriano sent off as they dropped two points at home to Malaga in La Liga.

The 1-1 draw leaves them five points adrift of the Champions League places and gives Malaga an important point in their fight to stay clear of the relegation places.

It could have been worse for Villarreal, who fell behind after 14 minutes to a Charles Diaz goal.

On 63 minutes Bruno Soriano equalised from the spot after Roberto Rosales was adjudged to have brought down Nicola Sansone to give the home side a point.

"We always find it hard against teams down at the bottom of the table," said Villareal captain Bruno.

"We are annoyed not to beat a very good Villarreal side," Malaga's goalscorer Charles, who felt he should have been given a second-half penalty, said.

"We should have been awarded a penalty and their penalty should never have been given."
