Footage of one of the assaults, released by police, shows the armed offender laying punch after punch into a dairy owner, who is on the ground behind the counter of his Papatoetoe business.

The decision to release video of the July 7 "sickening assault" was not made lightly but was done because the offender's hood had slipped and revealed distinctive tattoos, Detective Inspector Fa'amanuia Va'aelua says.

The Maori or Pacific Island man has a sleeve tattoo covering his left forearm and a band tattoo on his upper right forearm, near his elbow.

"We believe this man may also be responsible for up to another seven robberies of dairies and petrol stations across Auckland that have occurred since June," Det Insp Va'aelua said.

Just hours after committing the Papatoetoe robbery with a knife, the same offender is believed to have held up an Onehunga petrol station with a pistol.

The latest robbery was in Otahuhu on Wednesday night.
