Voters are urged to enrol by next Wednesday to have their say in the Mt Albert by-election.

Labour's Jacinda Ardern and the Greens' Julie Anne Genter are set to go head-to-head in the February 25 poll.

It is being held to replace Labour MP David Shearer, who resigned in December to lead the United Nations peacekeeping missions in South Sudan.

Those who enrol to vote by January 25 will be mailed an EasyVote pack, which contains information about the candidates and polling booths, Mt Albert registrar of electors Tanya Brand says.

Mt Albert has been a safe seat for Labour.

Mr Shearer won the seat in 2014 with more than 20,900 votes over National's 10,300 and the Green Party's little over 3000.

Just 3000 votes separated Labour and Green in the party vote, but that is not recorded in a by-election.
