Vukovic, Thomas ready to play for keeps

Contests all over the field will dictate who wins Sunday's A-League grand final, but one of the biggest may play out between two men standing some 100 metres apart.

Danny Vukovic and Lawrence Thomas will be the ball's final barrier at Allianz Stadium, and the two goalkeepers certainly aren't strangers.

Indeed they were teammates just last season at Victory, where Vukovic started as No.1 gloveman but was displaced by a back-up almost a decade his junior.

Thomas, 24, has kicked on in fine form this campaign with eight clean sheets.

Yet he's also been watching Vukovic's sensational revival at the Sky Blues, where the 32-year-old veteran notched 16 clean sheets en route to being named A-League goalkeeper of the year.

And 'facing' his former comrade in the season's biggest game will be a little strange.

"It's a weird one," Thomas said.

"I don't think too much about the opposite goalkeeper, but having worked with him in Melbourne he's a terrific guy and an even better goalkeeper.

"He's had an incredible season so he'll be hard to beat. Hopefully I will be too."

He certainly expects to be busy, predicting another Big Blue battle full of chances, which Victory must convert to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat to the premiers.

"With a lot of good players on the field there should be a lot of chances and a lot of good quality - hopefully a lot of saves as well," said Thomas, who also played in Victory's 2015 grand final win over Sydney at AAMI Park.

"I'm quite interested to see how an away final is going to be because I've only played in one final before and it was at home, so you sit around all day before the game.

"But to travel with the team will be good to be around the boys, have a good laugh and keep it relaxed."
