Winger Suliasi Vunivalu has extended his NRL contract with Melbourne until the end of 2018.

The 21-year-old was the competition's leading tryscorer in his debut season, scoring 23 in as many games.

His signing is good news for the Storm after losing fellow-winger Marika Koroibete to rugby's Melbourne Rebels.

Born in Fiji, Vunivalu moved to New Zealand at 16 to play rugby with an Auckland school but was spotted by Storm recruitment staff and made the move to Melbourne.

Storm football director Frank Ponissi said they were thrilled to lock Vunivalu in.

"He had an outstanding 2016 for a player in his rookie NRL season - not only to finish as the competition's leading tryscorer but to also play in our grand final side," Ponissi said.

"Suli is a wonderful athlete and a smart player who is looking forward to the challenge of going into his second season with a focus on continuing to improve his game."
