Junior Tall Blacks centre Sam Waardenburg has signed a basketball scholarship agreement with the University of Miami.

The 2.06m Waardenburg will join the Miami Hurricanes immediately and is expected to begin playing competitively in the 2017-18 season.

Waardenburg, 17, is a Rangitoto College student who has attracted attention from several US universities after performing strongly at numerous junior selection camps.

Three other Kiwis will play their rookie seasons next year in NCAA college basketball, including Sam Timmins (Washington), Matt Freeman (Oklahoma) and Tai Wynyard (Kentucky).

Jack Salt is entering his second year at Virginia while Tai Webster is set to play his final season at Nebraska.

Waardenburg says his long-term goal is to win an NBA contract.
