Waikato have eased to a 55-0 win over King Country in soggy Matamata to retain the Ranfurly Shield.

The holders scored eight tries to complete a second comfortable defence against the Heartland Championship opposition. They thumped Thames Valley 83-13 in Paeroa in June.

A Waikato team featuring six new caps took time to get going in wet conditions on Saturday but accelerated late in the first half to lead 29-0 at the break.

Hooker Hame Faiva bagged two tries while fullback Jordan Trainor bagged a try and kicked 15 points.

Waikato's next challenge comes from Wanganui in Cambridge next Saturday before North Harbour are their first scheduled NPC challengers, on August 27.
