Waikato-Taranaki road remains closed

State Highway 3 between Taranaki and the Waikato will remain closed until at least midday on Monday because of a large rockfall.

The slip at Mokau came down on Sunday morning and despite contractors working on it, the New Zealand Transport Agency says the risk of further rockfalls makes it too dangerous to reopen the road on Sunday night.

Motorists face an extra three-and-a-half hour journey via the recommended SH1 and Whanganui route as the NZTA said a slip at the Tangarakua Gorge had also blocked SH43 via Ohura.

The Mokau slip would be assessed around lunchtime on Monday and the road only reopened if it was safe, says the agency's Karen Boyt.
