Walker eases off at Dutch BMX World Cup

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 8/05/2016

New Zealand's riders have failed to reach the finals at the BMX Supercross World Cup in the Netherlands after Olympic silver medallist Sarah Walker chose to adopt a safety-first approach.

Making a competitive return 10 weeks after fracturing her arm, Walker decided windy conditions in Papendal presented too many risks in the elimination rounds. She rode off the back of the field in the three motos and failed to advance to the semi-finals.

Coach Ryan Hollows says Walker's arm felt sore at the end of a busy week of training and racing so she eased off.

Walker is preparing specifically for the world championships in Colombia in late May where she will seek to fill one of the last Rio Olympic qualifying spots.

Trent Jones produced a series of solid results in men's qualifying but a crash early in the quarter-finals ruled him out of contention. Fellow Kiwi Matt Cameron missed out on qualifying for the quarter-finals by one point.
