NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 9/03/2017

A 65km walking track through Paparoa National Park will be built as a memorial to the 29 men who died in the Pike River mine disaster.

Environment Minister Nick Smith says it will cost $10 million and the families of the victims have decided it will be called the Paparoa Track.

Construction will start in late autumn and the track is scheduled to open at the end of next year.

"The Paparoa Track is fantastic news for the West Coast," Dr Smith said on Friday.

"It adds to the West Coast's tourism attractions and is the first addition to the Great Walks network since 1993 - it is a fitting memorial."
