Kiwi shot putter Tom Walsh has begun his build-up to August's world athletics championships in London with a solid win at the Tucson Elite Classic in Arizona.

The 25-year-old Olympic bronze medallist, who holds the New Zealand record at 22.21m, kick-started his international campaign with a winning 21.64m ahead of Americans Darrell Hill (21.25m) and Ryan Whiting (20.85).

"First competition out of the way... feel like there is a lot more still to come," he said on Twitter.

Walsh, who took fourth at the 2015 world championships in Beijing, now heads to Eugene, Oregon, for the Diamond League's Prefontaine Classic on May 26-27.
