Athletics New Zealand has named an initial six-strong squad to contest the world athletics championships in London later this year.

The six are headed by Rio Olympics bronze medallists Eliza McCartney and Tom Walsh, who will contest the pole vault and shot put respectively.

Auckland shot putter Jacko Gill, who finished ninth in Rio, has also been selected alongside 10,000m runner Zane Robertson, 200m sprinter Joseph Millar and 50km race walker Quentin Rew.

Further athletes will be added to the team ahead of the final selection on July 26.

The world championships will be held in London's Olympic Stadium on August 4-13.
