Walsh second in Diamond League shot put

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 14/05/2016

New Zealand's Tom Walsh has made an encouraging start to his Diamond League shot put campaign, finishing second on Shanghai.

Competing in a world class field, Walsh was content with a solid series of throws which featured a best of 21.20m in his sixth and final visit to the circle.

It was the 24-year-old's first outing since winning the world indoor championship crown in Oregon two months ago with a best of 21.78m.

Walsh held the early lead with his opening 20.79m before being surpassed by world champion Joe Kovacs (20.82m), who ultimately placed third. Fellow-American Kurt Roberts produced the throw of the meet with 21.40m in the final round.

"It was a good start for me," Walsh said.

"I had a good first throw but then the competition went a little flat in the middle. I was pleased to bounce back with a 21m throw."

The Olympic-bound Walsh's next Diamond League meet will be the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon on May 27.
